Apple ThunderBolt Gigabit Adapter not connecting

I’ve been having issues getting my ThunderBolt Gigabit Ethernet Adapter working...assumed it was broken. Anyway, here’s how I got mine working.

My ThunderBolt Gigabit Ethernet adapter stopped working - I assumed it was broken so picked up another one. Still didn’t work - on any of my machines? All running 10.9.4 Mavericks.

Anyways, after a bit of digging I found a work-around that seems to kick the thing back into life.

Firstly, what’s the issue? The adapter always shows as not connected, like this:

I found the simple way to fix was to go into ‘Advanced’ and change ‘Configure IPv6’ from Automatically to ‘Link-local Only’.

After you have applied it - wait for 15-20 seconds, and what you should see is the link coming up and an IPv6 address appearing:

Now if you hit ‘Renew DHCP lease’ you should find that the device will also pick up an IPv4 address from your DHCP server.

Once I’ve made this change on the Network Profile the adapter works every time - it can take a good 15-30 seconds though after plugging in to pick up the address, but at least it works!
